The port folio section of a website is a window through which your clients analyze and asses your capabilities, to some extent you limitations too. Whether it’s about retaining old clients or even attracting new ones, a port folio should be fit enough to fulfill website’s purpose effortlessly. I have always associated business ethics with website successfully, and I am also a firm believer of the fact that there are some ethics that one should follow in order to create a perfect business portfolio on his website.
Presentation
Annoying Clients With Heavy Files
Sending heavy or large files to your clients will never be a good start for a marketing strategy because it may take them enough time to download. Clients wish to waste very little time of theirs on heavy and lengthy downloads, especially when the work belongs to a stranger. Keep the PDF files upto 5 MB and the page size A4 in case your potential client wishes to take print out of your work.
Messy Page Layout
Keep your portfolio clean, so that the page seems spacious to your clients. Linking the thumbnails to the website or to the full size design page will make navigation much intuitive to the viewer’s imagination. The page layout should never strain a viewer’s eye.
Displaying Too Much Or Too Less For Viewers To Imagine
Portfolio should be a perfect combination of work, which has to be displayed. If you display more than the required amount then, there is a chance that people get bored and miss rest of your exceptional works. On the other hand, displaying too little info might present you less qualified as a service provider.
Clear navigation com pliments a portfolio very well, and speaking of navigation reminds me of certain blunders that you should avoid:
– Avoid flash navigation, if you wish to have search engine friendly pages
– Keep the position consistent by avoiding multiple navigation places
– Keep things understandable by avoiding fonts with poor readabilit
Passionate
It’s all about being passionate because one should show the work, which he considers to be his best effort till date. The viewers who browse through your portfolio will be interested in your passion for designing and the enthusiasm you deploy in your work. Every entrepreneur should try and stick to his best work when it comes to showcasing your abilities.
Display
Your portfolio should cover valuable information, which clients wish to learn about you. The point is answering questions visually before they are even asked. To keep it short, your portfolio should cover information like goals/mission/vision, education, years of experience. etc. in a much realistic and convincing manner.
Things You Should Be Doing In Your Portfolio Section!
Social Sharing And Presence
Social sharing buttons on your portfolio is an excellent idea to share your updates with your friends in social media circuit. Social media promotions are highly effective in case you have a massive circuit that allows you to display your work across the internet. More the social media sharing better will be the word-of-mouth business promotion.
Your Best Work
Instead of forcing your potential clients to see all of your work, please them with some of your masterpieces. It will be even better if you keep the number count to 5 or 8 of your topmost designs. This will leave client with an everlasting impression that you are the best bet when it comes to website design and development.
Contact
What’s the point of keeping all these things in your portfolio, when an impressed user is not able to locate your point of contact within seconds? I would advise you to place a common place of contact on every page, like a contact form or an email button that allows your visitors to get in touch with you instantly.
Things You Should Not Be Doing!
Strange color and Font combination Playing with colors or trying different combinations in your portfolio might seem artistic to you, while some may find it odd and even unprofessional. The color combination should stay in line with the website theme and should be in a way that does not steal the limelight from your work showcased in the portfolio itself.
Same goes while selecting the font color and style for your portfolio! Some fonts and italics easily confuse a visitor and provoke him to leave instantly.
Excessive Text
People come to your website portfolio to see what you are capable of doing in terms of design, so avoid boring them with excessive texts. Guiding them around your website with minimized texts is a different game altogether, but when it comes to portfolio, do avoid excessive writing.
Bio
Not letting your potential clients know about yourself might turn out to be another big mistake. Your website portfolio section will be the perfect parameter of your skills, but it is your bio that establishes a cordial bond with the reader. However, when it comes to writing a bio, stick to basics with minimal bragging.
